The Places That We Also Cover

Never Miss A Hidden Gem.

Gurez Valley, North Kashmir, India.

Gurez Valley is one of those special places that feels like it’s straight out of a storybook. Tucked away in northern Kashmir, about 125 km from Srinagar, it’s often called the “crown jewel” of the region because it’s still so untouched and peaceful.

Here is what makes it so unique:

  • The Vibe: Unlike the busy tourist spots in Srinagar, Gurez is quiet and offbeat. It was actually part of the ancient Silk Route. You’ll see traditional wooden log houses and meet the local Dard-Shin people, who have their own unique culture and language called Shina.

  • The Views: The most famous sight is Habba Khatoon Peak, a huge pyramid-shaped mountain named after a legendary 16th-century poet. The Kishanganga River also flows right through the valley, making it a perfect spot for photography or just sitting by the water.

  • Getting There: To reach the valley, you have to cross Razdan Pass, which sits at about 11,672 feet and offers incredible panoramic views of the mountains.

Kalna, West Bengal, India.

Kalna (also known as Ambika Kalna) is a beautiful, quiet town in the Purba Bardhaman district of West Bengal. It sits right on the banks of the Bhagirathi River and is often called the “Temple City” of Bengal because of its incredible collection of 18th-century heritage sites.

Here is what makes it so special:

  • The 108 Shiva Temples: This is the town’s most famous landmark. Built in 1809, these are 108 small, hut-style temples arranged in two massive concentric circles. The outer circle has 74 temples, and the inner one has 34. What’s cool is that if you stand right in the center, you can see the Shiva Lingas in every single one of them just by turning around!

  • Terracotta Magic: If you love art, you’ll be amazed by the Pratapeswar Temple. The walls are covered in tiny, detailed terracotta carvings that tell stories from the Ramayana, the Mahabharata, and even scenes from everyday life back in the 1800s.

  • The Rajbari Complex: This is a gated area that houses several big, beautiful temples like Lalji Mandir and Krishna Chandra Mandir. These are unique because they have 25 peaks (pinnacles) on their roofs, which is a very rare style of Bengali architecture.

  • Spiritual Roots: The town is named after Goddess Ambika (Kali). It’s a very holy place for locals and was also visited by the famous saint Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. You can even see an old tamarind tree where he is said to have rested 500 years ago.

  • Weaving & Sweets: Besides the history, Kalna is known for its Handloom (Tant) sarees, like the famous Jamdanis. And before you leave, you have to try the local Makha Sandesh—it’s a soft, melt-in-your-mouth sweet that the town is famous for.

How to get there: It’s an easy weekend trip from Kolkata (about 80–100 km). You can catch a local train from Howrah or Sealdah, and the journey takes around 2.5 hours.

Mandawa, Rajasthan, India.

Mandawa is a charming little town in the Shekhawati region of Rajasthan. It’s famous for being an “Open-Air Art Gallery” because almost every building—from massive forts to tiny houses—is covered in beautiful, colorful paintings.

Here is what makes it a must-visit:

  • The Painted Havelis: Back in the 18th and 19th centuries, wealthy merchants built grand mansions (havelis) and hired artists to cover the walls with frescoes. You’ll see everything from traditional gods and goddesses to surprising “modern” scenes of that time, like the Wright brothers’ first flight, old cars, and even people using telephones.

  • Mandawa Fort: Built in 1755, this massive fort sits right in the middle of town. Today, it’s a stunning heritage hotel called Castle Mandawa. Even if you aren’t staying there, you can visit to see its incredible mirror work, old family portraits, and the view from the turrets.

  • A “Living” Museum: Unlike big cities, Mandawa is quiet and authentic. You can spend hours just wandering the narrow, sandy lanes, popping into old havelis like the Murmuria Haveli or the Hanuman Prasad Goenka Haveli. It’s a photographer’s dream because of the way the sunlight hits the old, dusty frescoes.

  • The Harlalka Well: This is a beautiful, rustic stepwell with four minarets. It’s a very peaceful spot and, according to local legend, if you make a wish here, it might just come true.

  • Authentic Rajasthani Food: You’ll find the real deal here—hot Dal Baati Churma, Ghevar for dessert, and spicy Laal Maas. It’s the perfect place to sit on a rooftop and watch the sunset over the desert landscape while you eat.

Travel Tip: The best time to visit is from October to March. The weather is cool and perfect for walking around. It’s also a favorite spot for Bollywood directors—you might recognize some of the streets from movies like Bajrangi Bhaijaan or PK!.

Kamakhya Temple, Assam, India.

Kamakhya Temple is easily one of the most mysterious and powerful places you’ll visit in India. Perched on top of Nilachal Hill in Guwahati, Assam, it’s not just a temple—it’s a deep dive into ancient legends and the “sacred feminine”.

Here is the lowdown in simple terms:

  • The “Bleeding Goddess”: Kamakhya is famous as the “Menstruating Goddess.” Unlike most temples, there is no physical idol here. Instead, devotees worship a natural rock fissure shaped like a yoni (womb), which is kept moist by an underground spring.

  • The Big Mystery (Ambubachi Mela): Every June, the temple hosts the Ambubachi Mela. It’s believed the goddess undergoes her annual menstrual cycle during this time. The temple closes for three days, and legend says the nearby Brahmaputra River even turns red! When it reopens, it’s a massive celebration of fertility and womanhood.

  • A “Shakti Peetha”: According to mythology, when Lord Vishnu cut Goddess Sati’s body into pieces to stop Lord Shiva’s dance of destruction, her womb fell right here. This makes it one of the most important of the 51 Shakti Peethas in the world.

  • Tantric Roots: If you’re into the mystical side of things, this is the place. It’s a world-famous center for Tantric practices. You’ll often see sadhus (holy men) in saffron robes and even some performing unique rituals that you won’t see anywhere else in India.

  • Unique Architecture: The temple has a very cool “beehive” shaped dome. It’s a mix of local Assamese and Mughal styles called the Nilachal style. It was rebuilt in the 1500s after being destroyed, and the design is truly one-of-a-kind.

💡 Quick Travel Tips:

  • The View: Since it’s on a hill, you get an incredible panoramic view of Guwahati and the river below. It’s a great spot for photos (though photography is usually restricted inside the main shrine).

  • Be Patient: Because it’s so famous, the lines can be very long. Expect to wait a few hours, or you can buy a “special entry” ticket to speed things up.

  • Dress Code: Keep it respectful—wear clothes that cover your shoulders and knees. A simple kurta or a long scarf usually does the trick.
